Wood pellets are generally made of wood processing waste or sawdust. They are compacted and cylinder shaped, also dry and partly dusty. Hence, this type of fuel is easy to handle. Industially manufactured pellets are qualified for having even properties. The processes of pellets production and the following combustion, both caude minimal air emissions; therefor, this fuel type is veri enviromentally friendly. In Finland, no chemicals are added to the pellets, as wood itself contains materials that serve as a natural binder. Nevertheless, wood pellets of nearly any quality can used with Säätötuli bio burning systems.
Benefits of wood pellets:
- High calorific value 4800 kWh/ton = 3000 kWh/m3
- Humidity 8-10%
Ø 8 mm
4,8 kWh / kg
3 MWh / i-m3
n. 8-10 %
Peat pellets producton was launched just a few years a go, so its use as a fuel is quite recent. Peat pellets are generally made from milled peat and the manifacturing is the same as for wood pellets. In the process of compression the pellets gain solid form and shiny surface. High calorific value of the peat pellets, stable price and need for noxious additives these could be considered their main advantages.
